A while back the annual Matsuri Festival was held in
Phoenix. I hadn’t been in a number

just lost interest in the festival after our beloved Akita, Ashiki passed on a few years ago. This past summer we brought a new Shiba

Festival and check out the Shiba Inu booth.

We had a nice time; my grand daughter loved seeing the Shiba

teriyaki chicken bowl for lunch.

up in their favorite Pokeman and Manga costumes.

perfect for printing my butoh prints.

Shortly after Matsuri Festival I attended a butoh
performance by Debra Minghi and RPM Orchestra at Braggs Pie Factory on Grand
Ave. I knew some members of RPM
from my years of hanging out on Grand Ave. and the Paisley Violin. I brought
along a sketchbook and managed to get a drawing or two that got worked into dry
point prints using the book pages.
The print, Scream Butoh was well received by every one involved. It will
be used for the cover art of the DVD produced during the performance. Since then we’ve had a chance to meet
over coffee and discuss our mutual interests in Butoh. Hopefully, new collaborations will
happen down the road.

Got numerous drawings and a couple are starting to find their way onto dry point plates and through the printing process. They both make me chuckle a bit, hope it works for you too.

Speaking of having fun, I was invited to teach a life drawing session at Penny Hanson's North High art class. I thought it would be fun and a complete departure from the norm and have them do a short pose session. Fortunately we had wonderful student models from the dance department who were more than up to the challenge of multiple short poses. The students drew 30 second, 1 minute and 3 minute gestures for half of the session. We were able to do a dance/short pose format for the remainder of the session. Towards the end of the class you could see the students loosen up and start to really enjoy gesture drawing. Ms Hanson has a great group of students who have talent and are a joy to be around. Hopefully I'll get a chance to go back.

I will be showing my work during the entire month of March at the Paisley Violin in Phoenix. I'll be joined by Stu Biscoe, Joan Thompson and Audrey Van Kirk. Hope you get a chance to drop by. Immediately the gestural qualities of this contemporary Japanese dance stirred my figure drawing soul. I love drawing short poses, too difficult for the model to hold for more than a couple of minutes. The movement, lines and imagination of butoh dance seemed like a natural fit for gesture drawing.

Briefly, Butoh is a modern dance form that originated in Japan. From Wikapedia: “It typically involves playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments, and is traditionally "performed" in white-body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motion, with or without an audience. But there is no set style, and it may be purely conceptual with no movement at all. Its origins have been attributed to Japanese dance legends Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno.”

So the butoh drawing project began. Our first effort, although fun and productive, was a learning experience. We were very fortunate to have worked with Danae, a wonderful model who has danced butoh. She had been living out of town when the butoh project germinated. Fortunately the universe brought her back to Phoenix and we were able to schedule a session. After some discussion of how to organize the session, we decided to simply let her dance. When she came to a position that she felt would be an interesting pose, Danae would pause while we drew. When the pose became uncomfortable she resumed the dance until she found the next pose. Essentially we had the honor of witnessing a 3-hour performance with at least 30 drawing opportunies.

Those of you who follow this blog know that my primary media is fine art printmaking, particularly dry point intaglio. In dry point the lines are scribed directly on the plate. It’s a visceral process of creating a printing matrix with the added bonus of non-toxicity. Quite often I scribe plates from live poses. During Danae’s dance I scribed a few plates one of which became my first piece of the project. Over the following weeks and months additional plates began to emerge from the drawings. It’s been an on-going evolution of matching paper and ink to the right plate. One of the beautiful aspects of printmaking is to continually experiment with each plate. This ongoing process of capturing butoh dance is far from complete. These are the first prints, please enjoy.

I am very happy to report that the Herberger Theater Gallery accepted Butoh II for their November exhibit. Additional information for the show will be forthcoming.Eric's Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02297267430064134137noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6091581576426572295.post-72375663651800747622010-05-22T10:49:00.000-07:002010-05-22T10:54:35.649-07:00Printmakers of ICON - Upcoming ShowI'm very happy to be showing with my printmaker friends at The Paisley Violin in June. I find leaves, twigs and assorted stuff from my back yard and glue them to a matte board matrix. Sometimes I add texture by brushing on acrylic mediums. The plate is inked and printed intaglio. I'll be posting photos of my work from time to time and keeping every one updated on shows and exhibits. At present, I have several dry point prints up at the Capital Cafe, 17th Ave and Van Buren in Phoenix that will be up through the end of the month. I also am participating in a group show of nude figure work hosted by Dinnerware Artspace in downtown Tucson.Eric's Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02297267430064134137noreply@blogger.com2
